My Philosophy
I was always apprehensive about writing Jewish music. Even as I began my cantorial studies, I didn’t feel I should be writing Jewish music until my Hebrew skills were sufficiently honed to make good choices about text setting, accentuation and all the things that make for a good lyricist (in Hebrew or English for that matter). I started writing settings in 2001, mostly for myself and for a special service here or there. Since then, I’ve written for the congregations I serve and for a limited audience. Today, I’ve written close to two dozen Jewish songs and I’ve set up this website to be able to share them with whomever may find them useful.
I am not a member of a songwriter’s guild and truth be told, I’ve always found the process of copyrighting and protecting my work to be so overwhelming and time-consuming that it kept me from sharing my work. I also erroneously thought that the only way to get my music out there was through publications put out by the usual channels and publishers. My thinking has changed over the years, and as I’ve seen up and coming Jewish composers self publish and make their music available via pdf and shopping cart, I’ve decided to take the plunge as well. Thank you for your support.
